Aim

The wooden cladding on our much-loved village hall needs replacing. We also want to upgrade the thermal insulation to modern standards.

Despite everyone's best efforts, it is not possible to hold back time for ever.  Our 80 year old, second-hand NAAFI hut is showing her age.  The cladding has in many areas been patched and repaired over a long period of time but it has now been acknowledged that the current timber cladding has reached the end of its useful life and needs replacing. Moreover, the thermal inefficiency of the building also needs addressing to upgrade to modern standards.

The Village Hall is located slightly to the north of the village centre and is in the proximity of several listed buildings and opposite a scheduled monument.  We are located within a Village Conservation Area and hence the planned works are subject to particular scrutiny by the local planning authority. Permission has been granted, but complying with the obligations imposed by the authority has an impact on the cost of the project. This includes a requirement under building regulations to upgrade the thermal performance of the building as part of the recladding works. 

It is proposed to:

• re-clad the building using a durable, natural finish larch board material which will retain the appearance of a timber clad building sympathetic to its location within the conservation area; and
• significantly upgrade the thermal efficiency of the building by inserting a more efficient type of insulation to bring the building walls closer to current Building Regulation standards. This will bring benefits in terms of reduced running costs and CO2 emissions.
